Former Transport Minister says ministry in excellent hands
Thursday March 20, 2008 PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy is fully confident in Datuk Ong Tee Keat’s abilities to bring about further development and improvements to the Transport Ministry. He said the ministry was in excellent hands as Ong was a leader of calibre. ![]() Over to you: Chan handing over his duties to Ong at the Transport Ministry in Putrajaya yesterday. “I have known him over the last 20 years as not only a very outspoken person but also a person who speaks from the heart,” he said during the handing-over ceremony at the ministry yesterday. Chan, the former Transport Minister, said the family spirit and hard work by his colleagues in the various agencies under the ministry over the last few years had brought many improvements and positive changes. He said all sectors of transportation in Malaysia had done extremely well due to a strong and dedicated team. He thanked Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for having the confidence and faith in him to helm the ministry four years and nine months ago. Ong, in his inaugural address as Transport Minister, requested the full support of all agencies to raise the ministry’s standing to that of Cemerlang, Gemilang, Terbilang (Excellence, Glory and Distinction). “We are aware that the needs and wants of the rakyat are increasing, and I am confident that with the basic infrastructure in place, we can further strengthen on what has been implemented and improve where necessary,” he said. Ong thanked Chan, and said he would still require his predecessor’s support in the form of the advice and with the latter’s permission, tap from his experiences from time to time. On the appointment of a Deputy Transport Minister, Ong said Abdullah would make the announcement at an appropriate time. He said that since his ministry had a large portfolio, he would begin to implement programmes only after he had fully familiarised himself with all aspects. - THE STAR |
