A heavy load for hawker

Thursday January 25, 2007

A 51-YEAR-OLD hawker, who was paid 30 sen for each prepaid reload card she sold, has been burdened with RM165,000 debt after the supplier absconded with her clients’ money.

Lim Bee Lay said she accepted a supplier’s offer to sell the cards at cheaper prices to supplement her income.

She said she met a man identified only as Raymond in January last year, and he had asked her to sell reload cards of various companies.

“The business prospered and I received orders in bulk. However, Raymond said he needed cash in advance.

“He also asked me to get more supply from other dealers at regular prices and that he would refund me the difference later on,” she told a press conference at the state MCA headquarters recently.

Lim said she gave Raymond RM36,300 last June and another RM45,500 in September.

She said the money was from her customers who bought in bulk, and meant as a cash advance for the reload cards.

She continued to take orders from her customers and in total, she owed seven people ranging from RM1,500 to RM96,950, bringing the total debt to RM165,000.

However, it was too late for her to deliver the cards because Raymond disappeared after that.

Lim said she ran away from her family and contemplated suicide when the disgruntled customers asked for a refund.

Her husband Fong Yee Yen, 56, approached MCA for help and MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Tan Yok Cheng then arranged for Lim to meet with her customers.

“Of the seven, one has died. Lim borrowed money from relatives and paid a total of RM17,000 to four of her customers, which was only about half the amount she owed them.

“The other two did not agree to her terms of payment,” said Tan, who urged Raymond to come forward and settle his debt with Lim. - THE STAR

Be more professional, traffic police urged

Wednesday June 7, 2006

THE traffic police should be more professional when issuing summonses to motorists who have broken the law, Penang MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau said.

Bureau chief Tan Yok Cheng said the bureau had recently received complaints from two motorists who felt they had been wrongly issued summonses.

The first complainant was sales executive Teh Chee Giap, 26, who received a traffic obstruction summons while he was sitting in his car waiting for a friend in Penang Road on April 3.

Teh said he had only stopped his vehicle for a few minutes when a policeman on a motorcycle put the summons on the windscreen.

“The policeman immediately sped off without even explaining what my offence was.

NO EXPLANATION:(From right)Tan,his secretary Lim Thoon Deong,Teh and Yeoh looking at the summonses.

“I later found out that my car was actually in a ‘waiting’ zone. So I had not committed any offence.”

A similar incident occurred to factory worker Yeoh Chin Huat, 28, in Macalister Road on May 1.

He claimed that he was inching his way in a traffic jam in front of the Moral Uplifting Society pre-mises when a policeman on a mo-torcycle suddenly stuck a summons on his windscreen.

“I did not even have a chance to explain as the policeman sped off. The summons was for traffic ob-struction,” he said.

Tan told a press conference that motorists had the right to know what offence they had committed, adding that the policemen in both incidents should have explained to them what their offences were.

“I will write to Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow and state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Christopher Wan about the matter,” he said.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Hamzah Md Jamil when contacted yesterday urged the two motorists to see him with their summonses, saying that he would personally look into the matter.
