State representative with the people’s touch

IN his three terms as Berapit assemblyman, Lau Chiek Tuan has set up four service centres in his constituency.

Focusing on the physical infrastructure in his area, YB Lau has made sure there are streets lights, while sports facilities, children's playgrounds and public libraries in residential areas are upgraded.

Now he has moved on to more daunting issues concerning health and education.

The Lau Chiek Tuan Higher Education Information and Counselling Committee was formed to monitor and analyse the intake of graduates into local universities.

Managed by a group of young graduates, the committee organises seminars and career guidance programmes for university applicants.

Lau, who is also Penang State MCA deputy chairman, has also embarked on a project to provide free tuition and revision books for poor students.

Lau, who is Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs State Committee Chairman, got involved in politics in 1976 when he was 21.

Lau began his political life as a grass root member, rising through rank and file.

He served as branch Youth leader for 12 years and then assumed the position of State Youth chief in 1998, and recently as state deputy chief.

Lau is grateful to his wife Liew Hee Choo, 51.

“She helps me at the service centre. She takes care of our three sons and loves me dearly. “She is very special,” he said.
