Solid support for Gim Soon
Friday February 29, 2008 LAM tiau tiau (hold on tightly) Datuk Lim Gim Soon – that was the response from Lorong Macalister Dato Kong shrine chairman Lim Kim Chong if the third-term Komtar incum-bent would get his vote. “We insisted that he seek re-election because he takes good care of us. He sees to the welfare of the elderly and sponsors all our community activities. “Whenever there's a pro-blem, we just approach him and he’ll get it done. “Sometimes it may take a while but he has never disappointed us,” Lim said during a ‘thank you’ dinner for the popular assemblyman in Penang on Tuesday. “For the past three years, he had given us allocations for various activities, including our weekly karaoke singing sessions,” he added. In his address to about 100 dinner guests, Gim Soon re-minded them not to take opposition ceramah too seriously. “It’s okay to go, listen and be entertained but do not be swayed by them because they will pu chien (disappear) after the election is over. “I work every day but don’t talk much. The DAP talks a lot but does nothing. In the Tanjung constituency, we have Chinese good primary schools nearby and temples. “The Government supports our religious and cultural activities and will continue to do so but we must make sure that the Chinese are well represented in the Government. “A vote for the opposition will just weaken the community's voice,” he said. - THE STAR |
Election Notes
The Penang Chinese Town Hall in Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling is a favourite venue for political ceramah in past general elections.
This time, political parties have been asked to look for alternative locations as the 1,000-seat hall is undergoing renovation work, starting yesterday. Work will only complete one week after the elections.
But even without the hall, politicians here are not without resources to reach out to voters.
With hawker food being an obsession with Penangites, more candidates are turning to coffeeshops and food courts to campaign during dinner or suppertime.
To liven up the mood, Barisan candidate for the Komtar state seat Lim Gim Soon held a karaoke session during his ceramah at a kopi tiam on Monday night. He plans to visit at least three more coffeshops over the week.
