Penang to promote marina to cruise liners

Monday January 29, 2007

PENANG is taking steps to promote Tanjong City Marina to more cruise liners.

Deputy State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Lye Siew Weng said the tourism sector in Penang would benefit tremendously when cruise passengers went sightseeing on trishaws, taxis and buses.

“This will directly result in better income for tour agents, trishaw riders and drivers.

“Traders will also benefit when the pas- sengers buy souvenirs and other items from them,” he said after presenting bunga telur and brochures to visitors who arrived on British cruise liner Artemis at the marina.

The 1,600 passengers were pleasantly surprised when they were given VIP treatment.

They were taken on a half-day trip around the Penang island.

Lye, who led the welcoming committee, said aggressive promotion strategies were taken to encourage foreign cruise liners to stop over at the marina.

“Our selling point is that the marina is located within the city. The moment they disembark they are in the city,” he said. - THE STAR
