A celebration for women

Wednesday March 5, 2008

IT was a night of songs and stirring speeches for women. Organised by the Nibong Tebal Wanita MCA division, the Interna-tional Women’s Day celebration, which falls on March 8, was filled with songs of love and affection and motivating speeches for the fairer sex.

The evening at SJK (C) Pai Teik in Nibong Tebal started with Lim Ying Tong, 10, dedicating a song to mothers called ‘huai nian ma ma’ (Missing mama) followed by an upbeat number called ‘Song ni yi ge da nian gao’ (presenting you with a large sweet cake).

The songs touched many hearts among the over 500 audience, comprising mostly women.

Another talented teenager, Annis Lee Nian Ning, 11, sang two songs ‘ying xing de zhi pang’ (Hidden wings) and ‘Qing ai de xiao hai’ (My dear child).

Dressed in pretty floral dress, Tan Lee Meng, 42, took the stage and sang ‘jin ye shen bian mei you ni’ (You’re not by my side tonight).

Nine-year-old Lim Jyue Yun, dressed in cute chilly red dress, entertained the crowd with two upbeat songs – ‘Zhu zi ge (A pig’s song) and ‘Gong xi gong xi’ (Hapy new year).

The crowd stopped digging into their eight-course dinner and were all ears when Nibong Tebal Wanita MCA division chief Khor Mei Lee said that women now were capable of multi-tasking.

“Women now are capable of caring for the family and building a career for themselves. They are the ‘finance minister’ at home and are able to influence their families,” she said.

There was also a hip-swaying line dance performance.

In her speech, Barisan Nasional candidate for Jawi state seat Tan Cheng Liang said women were playing more important roles in society.

“The BN Government had three women ministers, which showed the Government believed in their capabilities,” she said.

She said the Government had also set aside sufficient funds for the development of women in the country and enacted laws to safeguard women’s rights.

The crowd gave a thunderous applause when Tan said that every vote from the people would fuel her to serve them better and that she would request for more allocation for the development of the community.

Tan sang two songs dedicated to her constituents.

Also present was Barisan Nasio-nal Nibong Tebal parliamentary seat candidate Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman who went from table to table to greet the crowd. - THE STAR
