Special Interview with Datuk Wong Kam Hoong
Chairman, MCA Penang State Liaison Committee
MP, Bayan Baru &
Deputy Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry
Q: How are your feelings regarding the recent General Elections?
Overall, we are moved by the show of support from the people. The residents of Bayan Baru gave me an overwhelming majority of more than 18,000 votes and I shall do my utmost to represent their voice both at State level as well as in Parliament.
Q: What are your immediate priorities?
For the State, we would coming out with a Standard Code of Conduct & Ethics for all MCA elected representatives which is in line with our PM, Pak Lah’s call for a more efficient, transparent and productive Government. This will also help MCA Penang reinvent itself so as to be more relevant to the needs of the electorate. We will look into the Personal Development of all the elected representatives so as to help them provide more effective leadership to the people they serve. We will not hesitate to use professional help in this image-building exercise for the MCA Penang. We will do what it takes to further strengthen and enlarge our MCA service teams & build more service centers especially to serve the areas that we lost to the Opposition – namely Bagan(Parliamentary), Bukit Mertajam(Parliamentary), Sungei Puyu(State) and Bukit Gelugur(Parliamentary). YB Sdr Dato Koay, YB Sdr Lau and I will head a State Committee to look into the specific reasons as to why we lost in these places and to spearhead our existing efforts to better serve the people in these areas.
Q: What other areas?
The MCA Public Services & Complaints Bureau will be enlarged to accommodate the growing number of needy cases – the Center in Penang to be strategically located at our Jalan Pahang MCA Headquarters and a new Center in Butterworth, Seberang Perai, both under the direct supervision of our new ADUN for Bagan Jermal, YB Sdr Ooi. We will also look into new areas like using more ICT in our service to the people. Our new website, www.mcapenang.com will be used to create more public awareness regarding our services for the people.
Q: What are your long term views?
MCA has been synonymous with service and education issues. So our long term strategies will be to strengthen our existing efforts to meet the aspirations of the people for Malaysia to take her place among the modern and developed countries of the world.
